Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County is a warm, inclusive Jewish Day School that educates children from Early Childhood through Eighth Grade with a vigorous dual curriculum in General and Judaic studies.

A Schechter Education

Through our Kehillah model, teacher teams work collaboratively to guide, teach, and assess each child’s learning on an ongoing basis which brings multiple perspectives to each child’s progress, ensuring that children are appropriately supported and challenged.

Early Childhood

Our Early Childhood program, Gan 3's, Pre-K and Kindergarten, is a community that values exploration and open-ended play. We create a rich and nurturing environment filled with discovery, and one in which children’s innate curiosity and creativity are respected.

1-4 Kehillah

Through individualized attention and project-based learning, our teachers foster academic achievement across disciplines and stimulate critical thinking. They nurture strong relationships with each student, creating an environment of trust and growth in which students take ownership of their learning.

5-8 Kehillah

Students at this age are on the cusp of learning what their interests and passions are, and as 5-8 grade educators we believe it is our sacred duty to ensure that our students remain open minded and curious to new experiences and knowledge, because of the infinite possibilities lying ahead of them.

Israel Encounter

Schechter’s cultivation of Ahavat Yisrael (love of Israel) culminates with our annual Eighth-Grade Israel Encounter trip. Touring the country brings to life the sights and sounds that students have learned and heard throughout their years studying the land, the people and the ancient and modern texts. The trip is an opportunity to practice Hebrew acquired and to demonstrate middot learned by participating in Hesed projects, packing food for the hungry and visiting with elderly immigrants. This incredible journey affords our students a unique Kehillah-bonding experience during which they deepen their appreciation for the miracle of our Jewish homeland and develop a greater understanding of the complexities that surround her.

Living Jewish Values

Developing thoughtful, empathetic students who are secure in their knowledge as Jews and appreciate their responsibility to both the Jewish community and the greater world is an integral part of life as a Schechter student. From learning Torah trope and serving as a Shaliah Tzibbur (leading Tefillah) to bonding as a Binyan Buddy ("older sibling") or sharing details about a Tzedakah drive with classmates. Schechter students graduate with a love and appreciation for their heritage and an understanding that they have a role to play in improving the world.

Popkin Innovation Lab

Our Popkin Innovation Lab is a distinctive maker space that includes a Design & Learning Studio, as well as a Machines Room. In this space, students are encouraged to demonstrate Playfulness, Openness, and Perseverance as they learn to fear less and invent more.

The Arts

Visual art and music are central to the Schechter experience, nurturing students’ creativity, identity, and emotional well-being. Through hands-on exploration of diverse materials, techniques, instruments, and artistic styles, students develop technical skills, artistic expression, and a deeper appreciation for the role of the arts in the world around them. Art is integrated into academic learning, and students progress from early experimentation to thoughtful creation and reflection, culminating in projects like the eighth-grade legacy tiles. Music is woven throughout school life - Tefillah, celebrations, and daily learning - with students building foundational skills, exploring global and Jewish musical traditions, performing together, composing original pieces, and expressing themselves through voice, instruments, and ensemble work.

Athletics

The Schechter Bergen Physical Education & Athletics program provides a rewarding and enriching experience for all students, helping them develop their athletic potential while fostering a love of lifelong physical fitness. Our program reflects our commitment to the social-emotional and physical well-being of every child. Through our curriculum, students are encouraged to demonstrate positive sportsmanship, integrity, strong values, ethics, and derekh eretz - both on and off the field.
